AI and machine learning are among the fastest-growing career areas in India, and employers are hiring for these skills at a record pace. They are also asking for proof of hands-on ability more than ever, so the opportunity favours people who prepare well.
The numbers show the scale. Quess Corp reported nearly 3.5 lakh AI-related job openings in India over the 90 days before its June 2026 report. LinkedIn's AI Labour Market Report 2026 found that AI engineering job postings in India grew 59.5% year on year, the fastest among major markets. Naukri's World AI Day Report 2026 found AI skills named in 15.4% of tech job descriptions, up from 0.9% in 2020.
This article covers where the demand comes from, which job roles exist, the skills employers look for, what the pay looks like, and how to get started. It also covers what the same reports say about competition, because choosing this career with open eyes works better than choosing it on hype.
Why AI and ML Have Such a Wide Scope
AI and ML are not limited to one industry. Any business that holds data can use these tools to decide faster, cut costs or serve customers better. That is why the demand comes from many sectors at once:
Healthcare: medical imaging, disease detection and patient monitoring.
Banking and finance: fraud detection, credit scoring and customer service automation.
E-commerce and retail: recommendations, demand forecasting and inventory planning.
Manufacturing: predictive maintenance, quality inspection and supply chain planning.
Education: adaptive learning, automated assessment and tutoring tools.
Agriculture: crop monitoring, yield prediction and smart irrigation.
IT and software: intelligent automation, cybersecurity and generative AI products.
Recent reports show how this plays out in hiring:
Overall tech hiring is growing. Adecco India expects India's tech job market to grow 12-15% in 2026, adding about 1.25 lakh roles. The same report says demand for AI, data and cybersecurity roles grew 51% in 2025.
Advanced AI skills are scarce. Quess Corp says India has about 9.2 lakh AI professionals, but only around 2.57 lakh work in advanced areas such as LLMs, machine learning, NLP and agentic AI. Nearly 70% of current hiring demand sits in those areas, according to the HR Katha report.
Hiring is spreading beyond one city. LinkedIn's report names Bengaluru as the main hub, while Hyderabad (+51%) and Vijayawada (+45.5%) show fast growth in AI engineering postings. It also notes that small and mid-sized businesses are increasing their use of applied AI.
Popular Job Roles in AI and ML
AI and ML offer many career paths, not just one "AI engineer" job. These are the roles you will see most often:
Role | What the job involves |
|---|---|
Machine Learning Engineer | Designs, trains and deploys ML models inside real applications |
Data Scientist | Analyses large datasets, builds predictive models and turns results into business decisions |
AI Engineer / AI Developer | Builds AI-powered products such as chatbots, recommendation systems and generative AI apps |
Data Analyst | Cleans, visualises and interprets data; a common entry point into the field |
NLP Engineer | Works on language systems such as chatbots, translation and voice assistants |
Computer Vision Engineer | Builds systems that understand images and video, used in security, healthcare and vehicles |
MLOps Engineer | Takes models from experiment to production and keeps them running reliably |
Data Engineer | Builds the data pipelines and infrastructure that AI systems depend on |
AI Product Manager / AI Governance Specialist | Combines domain knowledge with AI understanding, including fair and responsible use |
Not every AI-related job carries an "AI" title. Many companies hire for AI skills inside analyst, developer and engineering roles, which gives newcomers more doors to enter through.
Skills Employers Look For
A career in AI and ML needs a mix of technical and soft skills.
Technical skills
Programming, mainly Python, plus SQL for working with data
Maths basics: statistics, probability, linear algebra and basic calculus
Core ML concepts: supervised and unsupervised learning, model evaluation and feature engineering
Libraries and frameworks such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow and PyTorch
Deep learning, NLP and generative AI basics, including prompt design and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
Cloud platforms and deployment tools such as Docker and FastAPI
LinkedIn's 2026 report points to rising demand for applied skills such as AI agents and AI productivity tools, which shows that employers value people who can build and deploy, not only study theory.
Soft skills
Problem-solving and analytical thinking
Clear communication, so you can explain results to non-technical teams
Curiosity and a habit of learning, because the field changes quickly
What Do AI and ML Professionals Earn?
Fresher ML engineers in India are typically quoted at about ₹6-12 lakh per year in 2026 salary guides, and pay rises sharply with experience and specialised skills. Treat these as estimates, not guarantees: no single official survey exists, and offers depend on city, company type and your portfolio.
Source | Fresher ML engineer range (per year) | How the figure is produced |
|---|---|---|
₹6-12 lakh | Benchmark table; the page does not state its data source | |
₹6.7-10.9 lakh | Model estimate based on job family, seniority and city multiplier, not a survey |
Hyring also puts the median ML engineer pay across all experience levels at ₹16 lakh per year. For salary movement across tech as a whole, Adecco India reported that median packages rose 18% in 2025 amid a wide talent gap. Naukri's report adds that professionals with AI skills earn higher median salaries than peers without them, though it does not publish a single premium figure.
The practical takeaway: your starting offer depends less on the job title and more on what you can show. A strong project portfolio, deployment skills and internship experience move you up the range.
Will AI Replace Jobs? What the Reports Say
AI is changing jobs more than it is removing them, but the change is uneven. The Quess Corp report concludes that AI is reshaping jobs rather than eliminating them. The same report adds two points every beginner should know: nearly half of AI vacancies ask for three to five years of experience, and fresher demand in the wider tech sector has dropped from a year ago.
That does not close the door on freshers. It means the people most at risk are those who wait, while those who learn to build and use AI tools, and who can show real projects, stand out. Repetitive tasks will be automated, and new roles in AI engineering, MLOps and AI product work are growing.
How to Start Your AI and ML Career
You do not need a PhD to begin, but you do need a steady plan and proof of work:
Learn Python and get comfortable writing and debugging code.
Build your maths and statistics base, at least the basics of probability, linear algebra and statistics.
Learn data handling with Pandas, NumPy and visualisation tools.
Study core ML algorithms and practise on real datasets.
Move into deep learning and one specialisation, such as NLP, computer vision or generative AI.
Build and publish projects on GitHub. A portfolio of working projects often counts for more than certificates alone.
Get practical exposure through an internship, then prepare for technical interviews and apply for junior, analyst or AI developer roles.
Employers want to see that you can apply what you learned to a real problem, so spend most of your time building.
